This sensor is located at the top of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 via an uncolored wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can activate spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails the ECU will display a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It's a bit tricky to test since there are various pins on the connector, and each one has different functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is functional, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. Check for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a significant decrease in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the ones that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one stays closed. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start if the G28 is disconnected and it runs perfectly when it is connected but it still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of that is -49c even after unplugging it. Also i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, but i think i've pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. I'm afraid i may have missed something. Please let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find a spare in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is easy to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing upwards). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that has to know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions about fuel injector timing etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these sensors go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner that can lead to engine shutdown.

A failing G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox and a gearbox which shifts more quickly than normal, or an unfire when in the gear. It is possible that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you experience any of these symptoms. They are cheap and easy-to-find, especially if they're a Bosch unit like ours. Alternatively, GM's version of this component is a good option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine sensor could cause a variety of issues within your vehicle. It's an essential component of your Audi's transmission, because it communicates to the ECU about how fast or slow the vehicle's crankshaft is turning.
