How to Replace an audi replacement key fob G28 Engine Speed Sensor

suzuki-logo.jpgIn this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located at the top of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can trigger spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails the ECU will display the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit challenging because there are two connector pins, and they perform different functions but the best method of testing it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms if the sensor is at full operation. Check for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll i had a big cut in power like the engine is out of gas or the injectors are not firing at all. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, three were drenched in gazoline, the fourth one was dry. When I crank the engine without sparks i put tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th one stays shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I got zero Ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it works fine when the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue still occurs at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do, but i think i've pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. But i am afraid I might have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 and they both work in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or from a parts store. Testing them is easy to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's end). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines needs to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, etc. To do this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you have a problem with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could cause an engine shutdown.

Some of the signs of a failed G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox and gears that shift faster than normal and/or a misfire when in gear. It is probable that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you experience any of these signs. They're cheap and easy to find especially if they're a Bosch unit like ours. Alternatively, GM's version of this component is an excellent choice.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a myriad of issues in your car.
