How to Replace an Audi Car key Cover G28 Engine Speed Sensor

FIAT.pngCharles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can trigger spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain of timing. However, the error code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test because there are several pins on the connector and they all have different functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is operational, it should read around 1000 ohms. If you are having problems with this component, look for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at full speed, i noticed a huge drop in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, three were drenched with gazoline the fourth one was dry. When i crank the engine, there are no sparks i put tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline pop out, but the 4th one stays closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I get zero ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when unplugged, still shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do, i think i've pretty much eliminated everything else. But i'm worried that I may have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate an extra in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is easy to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that must know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. In order to do this it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that can lead to engine shutdown.

A damaged G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox, a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, and/or a misfire in gear. It is likely that your sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you experience any of these symptoms. They're cheap and easy to find particularly if they're an Bosch sensor like ours. Alternately, the GM version of this component is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be a cause for a slew of problems in your car.
